BLUE TEAM AAR

BLUE Tac Freq: 4-5
BLUE Command Freq: 3-5
Safety Freq: 5-5

1030hrs Blue team disembarked the LCM at their advanced position and loaded onto the PBR2 (Pontoon Boat River). With a 12ft skiff in tow the team moved into position west of the Island.

The final tactical briefing on board the PBR Capt. Denebeim outlined the Blue Team strategy.  The team would divide into 2 units; a 4 man recon squad comprised of the commander and Intel officer (Castro) and 2 troopers.  Their mission would be to locate and collect the intelligence targets on the island. They would avoid contact at all cost. The remainder of the Blue team, under the command of Lt. Chong, would patrol the Island in search of enemy reconnaissance units. Blue team objective was to Harass and Interdict (H&I) any opposition encountered.  One Intel officer (Gowan) was attached to Blue squad.  200m from the island Capt. Denebeim and his unit separated from the PBR in the skiff, and lead the way through the SE cut, into the AO.  Upon entry into the inner lagoon, in close proximity to the island, the skiff pulled ahead of the PBR and visual contact between the two vessels was lost.

The PBR tied up to a houseboat at grid point 10.5n, 43w, and the assault squad established a beachhead in a bamboo thicket. This PBR would be the Blue team collection point (re-entry) after serving the "5 min die in place" when hit.   The squad immediately moved north along the west side of the island passing through the stage complex they engaged a Red team Intel officer exposed at the office (target name withheld).  3 Red team were KIA in this contact.

The Blue team Intel squad landed at grid 15n, 46w and deployed to the north end of the island and attempted to locate the Intel target (name withheld) there. They came into heavy contact at the boat docks, disengaging they sustained light casualties.

The Blue Team H&I squad determined that they were largely in control of the entire south lobe of the island. Senior NCO leaders suggested to the Intel officer and LT Chong that the Blue team H&I  squad could be effective at locating and interrogating the Intel targets on the south island.  Capt. Denebeim gave the Intel officer (Gowan) the cords of an Intel target. And the squad moved out to locate and interrogate it.

Lt. Chong's squad located the PUMP HOUSE target and then moved to contact north of the bunkhouse. In response to Capt. Denebeim's request for assistance, the engagement moved north toward the choke point as Red team elements were pushed back.  With a well-executed hold in place action, the Red team stopped the Blue attack leaving the levee littered with Blue team bodies (5min. die in place rule).

With all of the squad at the collection point, and Red elements moving on the bamboo thicket , Lt. Chong ordered the PBR to move the squad to the north lobe of the island. With Pvt. West at the wheel, the PBR motored north past the Boat Docks where some small arms fire was offered by Red team elements. No casualties were sustained.  The PBR nosed in at grid point (19n, 50w) and the H&I squad low crawled onto the shore. Pvt. Put out and returned the PBR to the original collection point.

The squad on the north island moved on the sewage treatment plant with a large pile of wood to provide concealment. With effective fires and an element of surprise, the squad entered the plant perimeter and pushed a fire team to with in 10 meters of the target. Then the offensive took a blow. The Intel officer was hit and went down just 20 meters from the target. Repeated attempts to call for the second Intel officer failed and the squad held until relieved by the end of the AM exercise.

How did we end up with each of the Red team Intel officer's codebooks?
How did we loose the target coordinate map?

13:20 hrs
Mission Briefing:
Each team would be Informed of the objective's code name by OpCom. If they had decoded that objective during the recon phase, the team would be able to move directly to the target. If not, they would have to attack whatever target the opposition was holding.

With the Blue team formed up on the PBR, OpCommand radioed the coordinates of the target.  The Capt. identified the mechanical yard as target and the team moved out. One squad moved directly through the stage complex while a smaller element quickly swept around the left flank and approached the mech yard through a break in the cedar fence behind the bunkhouse. No enemy was in sight and the Blue operators advanced to the objective and raised the Blue flag to establish control.  The Blue team elements in the stage area swept right and engaged the enemy.  The Red team swept around the east side of the island in the defilade of the levee and probed the Blue team perimeter.  Blue team defenders flanked these probes and secured their perimeter.
A series of Red attacks from the east were supported by an armored probe from the west. The Red team effectively spread the Blue defenders and pressed home a strong attack. Blue defenders positioned on the rooftops of the mech yard engaged the LAV with anti-armor grenades blunting the attack, only yards from the objective. Their defense held and the Blue team scored the first possession at the 60min mark.

The teams then received new grid coordinates from OpCommand. The Capt. determined that the objective was the sewer treatment plant. The Blue defenders moved out at the quick for the plant.  They entered the plant unopposed and set up a perimeter in depth. They closed the gates to the plant and improvised a lock with a board shoved through the gate.  The Red team had boarded their PBR and was coming in to the beach near the Plant. The Blue PBR had motored to the Boat Docks and Blue team elements were moving east just outside the Plant fence toward the landing PBR.  The Red team succeeded in landing and taking up firing position in their beachhead. Their attempts to charge the gates of the Plant were stopped by the Blue defenders. Until finally an armored support mission spearheaded their assault. The LAV drove through the gates and the Red team heavily outnumbered the Blue defenders. They made short work of the opposition and changed the Flag marking possession of the objective with 12min remaining in the hour. The Red team formed up at the Boat Docks and attempted to locate a beachhead from which to engage the Plant.  Their landing attempt failed due to underwater obstructions and they resorted to harassing fires from the PBR until the hour was completed.

OPCom issued the coordinates of the next objective:  The Choke point. Red team staged out of the laser docks and the Blue team staged off of the north pontoon dock at 42w, 19n.
Some confusion ensued as the Red PBR made a combat assault on Blue forces arrayed south of the choke point.  Mortar fire eliminated some Blue defenders, but a Blue sniper placed on the roof of a moored house boat eliminated all the Red forces onboard the PBR in a methodical series of automatic fires that could best be described by the technical term "slaughter".

After some confusion it was decided by OPCom that the scenario needed to be re-set. With the Red Team returning to the North Pontoon Dock and Blue Team PBR.  This restart happened in an orderly and timely fashion and battle resumed. A few ruffled feathers notwithstanding.

A small vessel battle ensued, where the Blue Skiff harassed the Red PBR, this distracted attention from objective and resulted in an "almost too quiet situation for Blue defenders dug in around the Choke point.  This was a false sense of the battle and the Red Team mounted a fierce attack on the Choke point, wresting control from Blue in the last minutes of the operation.

SUNDAY

0900hrs
The Red Team Formed up on the LCM for a beach assault. The Blue Team arrayed against them in the limited cover of the beach area. Heavy smoke was used to prepare for the landing with the LAV exiting the LCM first to provide an armored lynchpin for the Red assault.  Once on the beach the Red team advanced down a narrow road pursuing the Tactically Withdrawing Blue unit. They sustained continuous heavy casualties during this action, but pressed forward.  Blue set up a series of fall back maneuvers and prepared ambushes on the Red attackers, slowing their progress despite their use of the LAV as a spearhead.  Anti-armor grenades limited the effectiveness of the LAV to fits and starts.

Red pressed the Blue defenders to the choke point by 11:00hrs where they met a prepared defensive line.

11:20hrs
Red defenders arrayed across the south end of the island to retard and harass Blue attackers, reinforced by the LAV.  The limited cover and long open areas of the south island proved to be a great advantage for the Red defenders as they retreated along two lines of march.  One Red squad moved in the tree line along the western shore of the island utilizing the heavy vegetation to great advantage.  Attempts at stay-behind defenders hiding in the docked vessels proved very effective.

The second Red squad used the cover of buildings and structures for cover and met with initial success, until the Blue Team revised its tactical plan to press their vulnerabilities.
Red team held strong and the Blue attack accomplished half of the assigned objective.
Combat ended with the Red team standing strong at the Mech yard.
