AFTER ACTION REPORT
RANGER CHALK 1
LEADER: Dana, Roger E.
DATE: 19 MAR

Approx 10:00hrs - All chalks mounted
convoy and departed for perimeter security
Things quickly went bad, we over shot
our DZ and were forced to choose a DZ one block Northeast.
After double-timing it to our
objective, we arrived late but were able to secure our position on the
northeast corner of the building and maintained it until delta evacuated. Radio
channels were severely over-loaded, due to all chalks being heavily engaged and
needing assistance. It was tough to reach Juliet 6 on comms, but we eventually
did. New orders came down to now proceed to the downed Blackhawk, Super64.
We immediately moved out within minutes
we arrived and found delta already there and taking small arms fire ranger
chalks secured a perimeter and quickly started taking fire from hostiles we
maintained position, my men fought hard to maintain a secure perimeter. After
much intense fighting we received word that the convoy was approaching but was
stalled.
Chalk 1 then got the word to get over
to the staging area, to relive the convoy when it arrived. Once the convoy
arrived, the wounded were off-loaded took the primary mounted positions on the
Deuce truck. As I looked down Walker Street, I could see the intense fight
still raging. I asked the driver, “Ike please don't tell me were going down
Walker Street!” By the look on his face I could see that the answer was not
what I wanted to hear. We slowly moved out. I ordered my men to reload and be
ready.
We proceeded straight down Walker and
into the meat grinder. We took heavy fire and were wiped out before even
dismounting from our transport. After REGEN, we caught up with the convoy again,
it was stalled a half a block from the stadium no one seemed to be getting out
in front of the convoy for support.
After dismounting the chalk, Pvt
Gilbert and I decided we needed to do something to break through. We made a run
for the closest house on the north side of the street. We made it and were able
to lay down cover fire till more men arrived.
After a REGEN period, since that
previous plan worked well, Gilbert and I thought to try the same method again on
the other side of the street. We recruited some men from other chalks and
made a run for it. As we got a few yards from the objective my ad-hoc team was
abruptly cut down. Shortly after, we re-grouped and made the final run with the
full support of Task Force Ranger behind us. We finally were able to brake
through. All of the vehicles were now able to reach the safe zone at last … the
rest is history.
I am very proud of my men they fought
well. I also couldn't have done it with out my assistant leader Seth… Thank you
Sir!
